Rep. Dan Goldman (Dem, NY-10), rather than addressing the topic of the House Judicial Subcommitte hearing, “The Continuing Tragedy of Sanctuary Laws”, he took his allotted time to smear witness Frederick Akshar, Sheriff of the Broome County in New York. Rep. Goldman goal was to discredit the witness. The clip is the tense exchange from the hearing.
Mr. Ashkar’s response was that the allegations were “fictitious and slanderous” yet he was not allowed time to fully address Rep. Goldman and committee regarding this.
So the public was only left with Rep. Goldman’s version of the incident, which will be part of the permanent Congressional record.
Rep. Goldman is a disgrace.
Here are the facts:
In 2019, Sheriff Mr. Ashkar had a consensual relationship with a murder victim’s mother.
In April 2019, Akshar was accused of an “inappropriate relationship” with Mirella Masciarelli, the mother of murder victim Mario Masciarelli, whose 2013 case Akshar had investigated as a detective captain.
Accusations:
Masciarelli described Akshar as a “predator” who took advantage of her grief, alleging he interjected himself into her life unprofessionally.
Akshar’s Defense:
He acknowledged a “brief, consensual relationship” that occurred after the killer was convicted but before his election to the State Senate, denying any wrongdoing and labeling the accusations a “smear campaign.”

Professional Background of Mr. Ashkar
Law Enforcement:
Akshar spent 15 years in law enforcement, starting with the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and spending 13 years with the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, where he rose to the rank of Captain and served as Undersheriff.
Education:
He is an alumnus of SUNY Broome Community College (graduating in 1999) and attended the FBI National Academy.
Political Career:
Before becoming sheriff, he was elected to the NYS Senate in 2015 and chose not to seek reelection in 2021 to run for sheriff.
