Editor’s note: December 7th marks the 83rd anniversary of the surprise attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy on the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, killing 2,403 Americans and leading to the United States’ entry into World War II.
History
On December 7, 1941, Japanese aircraft launched a devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, destroying or damaging 19 ships, including eight battleships, and destroying over 300 aircraft. The attack caught the U.S. military by surprise, and the majority of the casualties were sailors and soldiers stationed at Pearl Harbor.
National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
In 1994, the United States Congress designated December 7 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. This day honors the lives lost and recognizes the sacrifices made by those who served at Pearl Harbor.
